SSU4xx SignalStrip Analog In/Output Units The SIGNALWARE SignalStrip Units provide a 12/16-bit analog input channel(s) and 14/16-bit analog output channels for building economical digital signal processing (DSP) systems. The DSP system may include only a Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or the FPGA may be combined with Texas Instruments TMS320C5x/6x DSP's. These SSU's are mounted on an FPGA carrier board to build a configurable/programmable, custom DSP system with a wide selection of analog and digital interfaces for stand alone embedded applications or for direct connection (board-to-board connectors) to the Texas Instruments 5xxx and 6xxx DSP Starter Kits.
The SSU431, 434, 441 and 444 have a passive signal conditioning network, including decoupling and in some cases transformers, followed by an A/D converter. The SSU432 and 452 have a D/A converter followed by either an amplifier, transformer, or differential current outputs. The converters are connected to the FPGA by Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) to minimize analog interference, eliminate "ground bounce" and provide a high speed connection. Finally, the sampled digital data may be processed on the FPGA carrier board or transmitted to the TI DSP. The analog connectors for input and output are mounted on the SSu's. SSU4xx Applications Applications include High Speed Data Acquisition, ATE, Industrial Process Control, Measurement, Ultrasound Systems, Tape Drives, Optical Networking, Medical Instruments, Spectrum Analysis, Communications (digital radio, base stations, baseband I/Q modulation), Audio Players and Recorders, Arbitrary Waveform Generators, Direct Digital Synthesis, Multi-axis Positioning, 3-phase Power Control and Motor Control systems.
Mounting Signal Strip Units The SSUs may be mounted on a variety of FPGA carrier cards. Because the width of the SSU varies, the number that can be mounted are show in the table below for 3 different boards. The FPGA carrier board also provides power and optional connection to the DSK bus.
